Little River Electric Cooperative is now accepting nominations for its Board of Trustees. Up for election is Calhoun Falls, District 3. Pursuant to the bylaws, any member seeking a position on the Board of Trustees must submit a nomination in writing signed by 15 or more members on the cooperative’s nomination form (available on the website or by request). The form must be submitted not less than 90 days nor more than 120 days prior to the meeting and all candidates submitting a petition must meet the qualifications stated below. Please note, nomination forms will not be accepted before May 20 or after June 19.
SECTION 3. Qualifications. No person shall be eligible to become or remain a trustee or to hold any position of trust in the Cooperative who:
a) is not a member of the Cooperative and a bona fide resident of the particular district which he or she is to represent; or
b) has in any way a direct business relationship with the Cooperative that is distinct from or in addition to the person’s mandatory Cooperative membership; or
c) is the incumbent of or candidate for an elected public office in connection with which a salary or compensation in excess of one hundred dollars per annum is paid; or
d) is employed by the Cooperative or was employed by the Cooperative at any time during the preceding five (5) years; or
e) is related or connected with any active Trustee closer than first cousin, whether by consanguinity (blood) or affinity (marriage), or of an employee of the Cooperative, or any subsidiary; or
f) is not a member in good standing of the Cooperative—a member is not in good standing when that member has had three (3) late payments within the past twelve (12) months or had services from the Cooperative or any subsidiary cut off or terminated for nonpayment within the past twelve (12) months; or
g) has had a prior conviction in a State or Federal Court of record, of a crime punishable by imprisonment for more than one (1) year and their civil rights have not been restored by pardon or amnesty—a conviction includes a guilty plea, guilty verdict by judge or jury, or plea of nolo contendere to any crime that carries a penalty of more than one (1) year; or
h) does not have the legal capacity to enter into a binding contract.
To become and remain a trustee, a person must have substantial business skills, experience, or education that will allow him or her, with the assistance of counsel, accountants, and other advisors, to understand and interpret business, legal and financial documents, and information so as to further the activities and affairs of the Cooperative.
Each trustee candidate’s principal residence must be served by the Cooperative. For purposes of this Section, “principal residence” shall be determined according to South Carolina voter registration law. Candidates shall provide sufficient identification information to the Cooperative to establish their principal residence. Candidates must further provide sufficient identification information so that a SLED or other equivalent background check may be performed.
Once elected, a Trustee must continue to meet the qualifications listed above to continue to serve and must attend at least eight of the twelve regular monthly board meetings.
